Wonderfully Uncomfortable (1 of 4): Finding Your Why

In this episode of the Tiny Shifts Podcast, Andy Nunn explores one of the most important foundations for doing hard things. Understanding your why.

Whether you are pursuing a goal, building a new habit or trying to change your life, clarity around your values and purpose is what keeps you moving when things get difficult.

This episode introduces a practical way to define your values, understand what drives you and build a stronger sense of direction in your life.

WHY DOING HARD THINGS MATTERS

We often chase comfort, convenience and quick wins.

But a meaningful life is not built on constant pleasure. It is built on growth, challenge and purpose.

There are two types of satisfaction:

  • Short-term pleasure that feels good in the moment

  • Long-term fulfilment that comes from doing difficult but meaningful things

The most fulfilling lives tend to balance both. But the majority of your time should be spent on the things that build growth, discipline and long-term meaning.

THE PROBLEM MOST PEOPLE FACE

Many people feel stuck, unmotivated or disconnected.

Not because they lack ambition, but because they lack clarity.

Without understanding your values:

  • You chase the wrong goals

  • You rely on short-term gratification

  • You feel conflicted and inconsistent

This is why finding your why is the foundation for everything that follows.

WHAT IS YOUR WHY

Your why is not the goal itself.

It is the deeper reason behind it.

It is what drives your behaviour when motivation fades.

It is what keeps you going when things feel uncomfortable, uncertain or difficult.

Without a clear why, it becomes almost impossible to stay consistent.

HOW TO FIND YOUR WHY

The starting point is understanding your values.

Values act as your internal compass. They shape your decisions, your behaviour and how you respond to challenges.

To begin, reflect on three key questions:

  • What drives or inspires you

  • Where do you draw strength from

  • What gives you a sense of purpose

Your answers to these questions reveal what truly matters to you.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR VALUES

Values are not just ideas. They show up in how you live.

But if they are misunderstood, they can lead you in the wrong direction.

For example:

  • Freedom without discipline can become chaos

  • Enjoyment without structure can lead to short-term thinking

  • Comfort without challenge can lead to stagnation

When your values are aligned properly, they create clarity and direction.

ALIGNING YOUR LIFE WITH YOUR WHY

Once you understand your values, you can begin to align your actions with them.

Ask yourself:

  • What behaviours reflect the person I want to be

  • How do I respond when things get difficult

  • What small actions can I take consistently

Because your why is not something you think about occasionally.

It is something you live daily.

USING YOUR WHY IN DIFFICULT MOMENTS

The real test of your why comes when things get hard.

When you are tired
When you feel resistance
When you want to quit

These are the moments where your values matter most.

Instead of avoiding discomfort, you can use it as a signal.

A signal to act in alignment with who you want to become.

BUILDING A PERSONAL MISSION

A powerful way to bring your why to life is through a simple mission statement.

This should answer:

  • What you want to do

  • How you want to do it

  • Why it matters

This gives you clarity, direction and a reference point when you feel lost or uncertain.

THE ROLE OF ENVIRONMENT

Your environment plays a huge role in shaping your behaviour.

Who you spend time with
What you consume
How you structure your day

All influence your ability to stay aligned with your why.

If something matters to you, you need to protect time for it.

Even if it is just a small amount each day.
